Francis Ramirez, Online Services Manager
Francis Ramirez is the Online Service Manager at DeakinPrime and specialises in eLearning, Web Accessibility, Business Analysis and Enterprise Architecture. He is responsible for managing a team of web development professionals who design, program and support online learning materials and systems for DeakinPrime clients.
Prior to joining DeakinPrime where were you?
I had two jobs. I was at Swinburne University, teaching Advanced Web Development and 3D Animation in the Master of Multimedia program. I was also working as a Multimedia Developer in MindAtlas Pty Ltd.
As the Online Services Manager what are you most passionate about?
I am passionate about providing an environment that creates high-performing, engaged team members. As Online Services Manager at DeakinPrime, I also believe I am in the right place to explore online learning opportunities in the multi-device (e.g., mobile, tablet, desktop) age we are in. This is a space I am very excited about. I am looking forward to making other people excited about it too!
In your view what makes a successful manager?
I believe a successful manager is one who brings out the best in his or her team. As best as I can, I base my people management decisions on this principle.
What can DeakinPrime offer to organisations?
DeakinPrime is unique in that we can provide holistic solutions based on a broad range of products and services. We have access to the faculties with teaching and research expertise across areas including education, health, environment and technology. We are the registered training organisation of Deakin University delivering quality Vocational Education and Training programs. As well, we have been in the business of designing tailored and custom programs for professional bodies, managers and leaders in the corporate world. We have contributed significantly to Deakin's strategic goal of 'delivering effective partnerships'.
What do you enjoy most about working at DeakinPrime?
In my career, I have worked longest (seven years!) at DeakinPrime. My colleagues are a joy to work with and I could not ask for a better group of workmates.
Name a business leader you admire
I admire Steve Jobs for his vision. He stood by his values and has proven to the market that, to lead in one's industry, one must take risks.
What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?
Someone once told me: 'Before I can look after others, I must first look after myself'.
What skills or qualities do you wish you had?
I play the piano, drums and guitar, but I have yet to learn how to whistle.
What are you reading now?
I am reading The Picture of Dorian Gray via the Kindle App on my Samsung Galaxy Tablet.
How do you strive to achieve work-life balance?
Some of the ways I strive to achieve work-life balance include:
- Having brunches with my wife and our baby daughter during the weekends
- Exercising at least 30 minutes a day, four times a week
- Making sure I account for travel time between meetings in MS Outlook
