Tackling employee disengagement strategically
July 8, 2011
‘An overwhelming 82 per cent of workers in Australia feel disengaged or disconnected at work, according to an industry survey conducted by Gallup Consulting’
Employee disengagement in Australia, and the rest of the world, is at an unprecedented high. Results from Aon Hewitt's Best Employer Australia and New Zealand survey show that of the 124,000 employees interviewed across 200 organisations in these two countries, overall engagement fell by 3.6 per cent this year to 53 per cent.
The costs associated with low employee engagement are astronomical! According to Ferri-Reed (2010), the cost of a disengaged worker averages 2.5 hours per day, add those hours in one year multiplied by the number of disengaged employees and the totals would make any CFO shudder.
There are a variety of methods organisations can introduce to address engagement. DeakinPrime’s Manager of Corporate Affairs and Organisational Development, Vikki Kimberlee states that:
‘In order to improve employee engagement it is paramount to create optimal working environments, provide employees with the best training to improve their skill sets, introduce meaningful reward and recognition programs and be sure to invest in management and leadership skills as engagement starts and ends with managers and leaders.’
Does your organisation need to invest in strategic learning and development (L&D) solutions to tackle employee disengagement? According to Elizabeth Lor, Principal Consultant at DeakinPrime:
‘It is imperative that an organisation sources a corporate education provider who is able to understand its business, and has a proven ability to customise L&D solutions to meet specific organisational demands such as improving employee engagement.’
Here at DeakinPrime, we have developed Nine Dimensions of Leading Practice which our strategic consultants use to assist business leaders in meeting specific organisational objectives.
